and Pulses, viz. Red Gram (Arhar or Tur), Gram (Chana), Green Gram

selected Districts of 25 States. The field survey was
conducted by the Field Investigators of Designated State Agencies
(DSAs) under the supervision & guidance of Officers of the
Directorate of Marketing & Inspection posted at State H.Qs. A
Technical Committee was set up under the Chairmanship of the
Agricultural Marketing Adviser to the Govt. of India, to monitor the
survey. For the purpose of field survey, Six Schedules were
designed. Schedule I & II were one time Schedules and
information on village profile was collected by the field
investigators only once. Information in Schedules III to VI
was collected by the field investigators on quaterly basis over a
period of three years (1996-97, 97-98 and 98-99). The National
Informatics Centre (NIC) provided technical support by designing
data entry module for computer data entry and development of
software for data analysis. The Regional Computer Centre,
Calcutta, provided the services for data entry in view of the
shortage of manpower with the DMI. The methodology for Estimation
